13 Civil Engineering Firms Bid for Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Expressway Project
Bharatmala Project 2023 : The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has received 24 bids from 13 civil engineering firms to construct a 19.88 km long elevated highway called the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Expressway. The project is estimated to cost Rs 5,855 crore and involves building a double-decker access-controlled elevated highway along the Cooum River to segregate local traffic and reduce congestion. The project is expected to double the handling capacity of the port, reduce waiting times, and decrease travel time for vehicles by an hour.
The NHAI had invited tenders for the project in July 2022, which were divided into four engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) packages. Two companies, Afcons and J Kumar, have bid for all four packages. The other bidders have bid for individual packages.
NHAI PROJECTS 2023 : Nitin Gadkari Ji Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India said Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative, a new Greenfield Corridor Project is underway in the state of Tamil Nadu. This involves the development of a Double Tier 4-lane Elevated Corridor from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal.
The completion of this project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Chennai by segregating local traffic movement onto one tier of the Elevated highway. Additionally, it will double the handling capacity of the port, reduce waiting times at the port, and decrease travel time for vehicles bound for the port by an hour.
The project is specifically designed to manage the expected increase in port-bound traffic, which is predicted to double by 2040 from current levels. - Package 1: 4.262 km, estimated cost of Rs. 9,87,04,00,000, connecting km 0.342 to km 4.604.
- Package 2: 5.096 km, estimated cost of Rs. 11,79,04,00,000, connecting km 4.604 to km 9.700.
- Package 3: 4.485 km, estimated cost of Rs. 9,46,37,00,000, connecting km 9.700 to km 14.185.
- Package 4: 6.038 km, estimated cost of Rs. 8,23,09,00,000, connecting km 14.185 to km 20.223.
The bids for the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Expressway project have been submitted and will now undergo technical evaluation, which will take about a month to complete. After that, the financial bids of the qualified bidders will be opened to determine the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for each package.
Maduravoyal is the eastern terminal of the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway project’s Phase 4, which is currently pending a tender notice. This new project can be considered an informal “Phase 5” of the BCE, as it will extend the expressway further into the core of Chennai.
